Shipping Container Grades & Conditions

Shipping Container Grades & Conditions

Shipping containers can be purchased new, used, or refurbished, each with its own advantages. New shipping containers and used shipping containers vary in condition, from minor wear and tear like chipped paint to more noticeable rust from exposure to the high seas. Every container has a unique history, which means its condition is different from others.

To simplify the process of buying a used shipping container, containers are classified into four main condition categories. Understanding these categories makes it easier to choose the right one for your needs.

New (One-Trip)

A used one-trip container is exactly what its name suggests—a shipping container that has only been used once. Typically, it is shipped with freight from China before being resold as a “one-trip” product. These containers are in excellent condition, with clean interiors, unmarked floors, and no major stains or damage.

If you’re looking to build a container home, office, or retail space, a one-trip shipping container is an ideal choice. Its minimal wear and high durability make it one of the best options available.

Cargo-Worthy (Cargo-Worthy)

A Cargo Worthy Grade (CWO) shipping container is the second-highest grade of used shipping containers, typically assigned to units that are around ten years old. These containers are structurally sound, free from major holes and dents, and fully functional, making them secure and safe for transport or storage.

Although cargo-worthy containers may show cosmetic wear, their integrity remains intact. A CSC (Convention for Safe Containers) certification plaque is placed on the door, confirming that the container has been inspected and approved for overseas shipping.

Wind and watertight (Wind & Watertight)

The Wind and Waterproof (WWT) shipping container is the third-highest grade available. While these containers are not certified for international shipping, they are perfect for storage. The WWT rating ensures that the container is structurally sound, keeping your goods protected from wind and water. However, minor dents and scratches on the exterior are common.

As is (As-Is)

The As-Is (AS-IS) shipping container category includes units sold without warranties, meaning they are available in any condition. These containers often have significant damage, including:
Large dents and rust
Missing steel sections
Damaged doors
Rotten floors

As-Is containers are not suitable for exports, but with proper repairs, they may still be used for storage or repurposed projects.
